Tomas and Natasha Duran of Santa Fe wanted a party for their son Jacob’s ninth birthday that would be less of a hassle and more fun than his previous birthday party at home, which had required days of prep and clean-up.

Their choice? A party at the Santa Fe Community College ropes course, formally known as the "Teamwork in Action Challenge Course."

The family met with David Markwardt, director of the college’s Teamwork in Action program, to choose the best activities for Jacob and his friends. They were presented with a variety of low and high events, including a climbing tower, giant ladder and zip line. Since Jacob and his friends are thrill-seekers, they chose two high events: the Giant Swing and the Shaky Pole.

The high events take place 20 to 45 feet off the ground. Never fear, though; the staff outfits all the youngsters in full-body harnesses and helmets. Trained personnel securely attach the kids to safety ropes. Since all of the activities involve teamwork, no one feels left out of the action.

Tomas, Natasha and other parents came to cheer the kids on as they scaled new heights, conquered fears and celebrated achievements. “It’s fun to see the kids use teamwork to accomplish their goals, while having a lot of fun,” said Tomas, an assistant professor at SFCC.

Jacob described the experience as “awesome,” and his party guests concurred. Santi Salazar, 10, said of the Giant Swing, “I loved it. It was scary, but then I felt like I was flying. I would rate it as a 10!”

The family brought cake, pizza and refreshments to celebrate their son’s birthday and his friend’s accomplishments. And yes, they sang “Happy Birthday.”

To arrange your party and find out more information, contact Markwardt at (505) 428-1637 or david.markwardt@sfcc.edu. The fee is $100 per hour or $270 for three hours, for up to 15 participants.
