Tumbleweeds Directory & Calendar FAQ

Each issue of Tumbleweeds includes a day-by-day calendar of family events, and a seasonal directory of camps, classes and other ongoing programs.
What goes in the directory? What goes in the calendar? We receive these questions a lot!
The rule of thumb is:

If it is an activity that participants can attend on a one-time basis, it goes in the calendar.
Our day-by-day calendar of family events includes story times, nature walks, family movies, art festivals, theater and dance productions, and other events that are open to the general public, and which can be attended on a one-time basis. We also include events specifically for parents, such as an education talk or parents-night-out.

There is no charge for listing an event in our calendar, but entries must be very brief – what, where, when, and a contact phone – so we can include as many as possible. Entries that we receive after we go to print will be added to our website as time allows. We reserve the right to refuse entries due to space limitations or because we feel they’re not appropriate for children and families.

Which months in which quarter?
Our Spring calendar includes events taking place in March, April and May.
Summer calendar includes events in June, July and August.
Fall calendar includes events in September, October and November.
Winter calendar includes events in December, January and February.

Submit your calendar entries by email here.

If it is an ongoing activity, it goes in the directory.
Our directory is for classes and programs that are offered in a series (even if there is an option to attend on a drop-in basis). Paid classes go in the directory. Performing and visual arts classes, music lessons, aftercare programs, tutoring services, camps, sports sessions, parent education classes and other ongoing programs go in the directory.

Directory listings are free for display advertisers, or $50 plus tax for non-advertisers, and are limited to 85 words. We offer two “Double-Shot Specials” a year, an option to list your program in two issues for $85: Spring and Summer; and Fall and Winter. (We don’t mix-and-match other issues.) Listings submitted at more than 85 words will be returned for resubmission, or edited at our discretion. The directory for each quarter runs in our print issue and on our website.

The content of the program directory varies by issue:

Spring issue: Spring Break and Summer Camps & Programs – Two separate sections: Spring Break Camps & Programs, offered during public school spring break; and Summer Camps & Programs, a preview of programs that will be offered in June, July and August. Please note that this directory does not include spring afterschool programs.

Summer issue: Summer Camps & Programs – Residential and day camps, classes, workshops and other ongoing programs offered during June, July and August.

Fall issue: After-School Programs – Classes and programs offered outside the school day, including afterschool and weekend programs, home school activities, tutoring and other supplemental educational services offered in September, October and November.

Winter Issue: Winter Fun – Afterschool and weekend programs in December, January and February (same guidelines as those listed in the fall directory) plus camps and classes offered during winter school vacation.

Submit your directory listings on our directory submissions form.

Tumbleweeds’ directories and calendar are perhaps the most consulted feature in each issue. Including your activities and programs helps make these resources as useful to readers as possible.
